Massive Crypto Theft Linked to North Korea
The FBI announced on October 31st that hackers connected to North Korea are suspected of stealing cryptocurrency. This group, known as TraderTraitor, allegedly took over $6 billion from Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange.
Investigators found that the hackers converted stolen digital assets into Ethereum to hide their origin and money launder. The FBI warned that they might use other methods for future money laundering activities. This complex cyberattack involved a compromised laptop and malicious software designed to erase evidence, making the investigation challenging.
Binance stated it would use its own funds to recover about 90% of the stolen digital assets. The company's CEO assured customers that they would not suffer financial losses from this incident. Binance temporarily stopped withdrawals to secure its system and planned to resume services on November 1st.
