Protests Over Living Costs Become Violent in Germany
Shops were looted in Frankfurt late on Saturday as protests against the high cost of living turned violent in several German cities. The unrest occurred as thousands participated in demonstrations organized by the group "Gen Z regelt".
Besides Frankfurt, incidents of violence were reported in Berlin, Cologne, and Hamburg. Protesters threw fireworks, stones, and bottles at emergency workers, and police used water cannons to disperse crowds. The "Gen Z regelt" group stated their aim was to fight for peace and freedom, and called for better support for health and education systems. Organizers had estimated around 18,000 protesters in Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin, though police reports suggested fewer.
The protests in Germany happened on the same day as similar large-scale demonstrations in France and other European countries. Authorities made many arrests in Frankfurt, and a police spokesperson confirmed this. The demonstrations highlight widespread concerns about the cost of living and public services across Europe.
